Exporting to Tanzania β€” EAC duty, TBS conformity and TFDA

Last reviewed 2026-10 Β· 4 sections

Tanzania is a gateway to East Africa with a familiar structure: a common external tariff across the community, and pre-shipment conformity for regulated products. The unfamiliar part is the registration regime behind it.

EAC duty and the pre-shipment certificate

  • Tanzania applies the East African Community common external tariff, so duty is governed at community level for the tariff line β€” and entry into one EAC state is entry into the region.
  • The Tanzanian standards body runs a pre-export verification of conformity programme for regulated imports. The Certificate of Conformity is obtained in the country of export, before shipment, through an appointed inspection agency β€” so the goods have to be inspected in India.
  • Without the certificate, goods are exposed to destination inspection, delay and possible refusal. Check the current scope for your product before booking freight.

Food and drugs: TFDA

The Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority regulates food, drugs, cosmetics and medical devices. Product registration is a Tanzania-side process, but it depends on your dossiers, labelling and, for some categories, facility information. As with Kenya and Nigeria, registration is a project, not a shipment form.

Labelling and language

  • Labelling is required in English and Swahili for many consumer products, with prescribed content.
  • Tanzanian standards apply to defined product categories, some mandatory through the conformity route.
  • Import VAT-type taxes apply and are handled by the importer.

Documents and reading the market

  • Commercial invoice, packing list, transport document, certificate of origin for any preference claim, Certificate of Conformity for in-scope goods, TFDA registration where applicable, bilingual labelling artwork.
  • Tanzania is also a distribution point for landlocked neighbours, so recorded imports include goods that leave the country β€” the same gateway caveat as the Gulf and EU hubs, in African form.
